"United States Hotel" The United States Hotel was Philadelphia’s most prestigious hotel, located directly across the street from the Second Bank of the United States (at the time the Custom House), on the North side of Chestnut St between 4th and 5th Sts.
The opening paragraphs of this web page document the US Hotel’s history and some of its famous visitors, including several presidents (but not Andrew Jackson). Charles Dickens stayed there on his tour of America and was visited in his room by Edgar Allan Poe. Lippard, who wrote about Dickens visit for The Spirit of the Times newspaper, may have been in the crowd that mobbed the hotel on Dickens arrival. The Spirit's offices were just one block south of the hotel at the corner of Third and Chestnut.
The Ton Hotel (or House) where Fitz-Cowles has been forced to relocate may be Lippard’s abbreviation for the Washington House, which was located on Chestnut St above 7th St. Both the Washington and United States are listed in the Stranger’s Guide to Philadelphia
Annotation of The Quaker City is an ongoing project. I will periodically add new notes or update existing notes and let the reader know when I do so on The Quaker City Blog.
